200 points to start to a max. of 225 for period 2. - For every massacre you may add 10 points to your warband, to a max of 225 points
- For every victory you may add 5 points to your warband, to a max of 225 points
- Must have at least 2 core units
- No more than 10 units
- Warbands may include up to one Special and one rare choice, however if you do not select a rare choice you may include an additional Special choice
- Warbands may include 0-2 Hero-level characters though their combined points cots (including all equipment, upgrades, abilities, etc.) may not exceed 150 points. Warbands may never include Lord- level characters.
- Must have one commander (either a hero-level character or a unit champion. If a unit champion he must remain with his unit at all times. If a Hero-level character is chosen as the Commander, his point cost counts against the 150-point maximum described above.
- Warbands may include 0-1 war machine or chariot, but no more than 1, even if a unit can be made up of more than 1 chariot.
- Warbands may one flying unit or creature.
- Warbands must obey the army list restrictions placed on numbers of certain units, etc.
- Minimum unit size for 20x20 or 25x25 bases is 3
Minimum unit size for 25x50 bases is 2
Minimum unit size for 40x40 or 50x50 bases is 1
- No regiment may take any unit options other than weapon and armor upgrades, unless the regiment meets its normal unit minimum size listed in the army book.
Examples include command models, upgrades in status
- Maximum unit sizes still apply
Special for Empire:- The minimum size for a detachment is 3 and only units six or stronger may take a detachment
Special for Orcs & Goblins:- Common goblin and Night goblin units need only be 10 strong to qualify for command models
- Night goblin units under 10 strong may not take fanatics; 10-14 strong can take 1 fanatic,; 15-19 strong can take 2; 20+ strong may take up to 3 fanatics
- A Black Orc Big Boss counts as two Hero choices. Thus, if a Black Orc Big Boss leads the warband, he will be the only hero in the warband.
Special for Tomb Kings:- Need not include a spellcaster like normal
- Cannot take both a General and a Hierophant
- Warband can be led by a Tomb Prince, Icon Bearer, Liche Priest or unit champion. (However no Lord-level characters)
- The commander acts as both General and Hierophant. If destroyed the warband will begin to crumble as per p. 21 of the Tomb Kings Army book
- Tomb Kings and Liche Priests who lead warbands use incantations as per the normal rules.
- If, and only if, an Icon Bearer or unit champion is leading the warband, rules for incantations work differently. Each Magic Phase, any Undead Tomb King unit with a unit champion, standard bearer, and a musician may cast any one of the four Tomb King Incantations as a bound spell with a power level of d6 - though Smiting, Urgency and Summoning may be cast only on the unit performing the incantation. If at any time the unit loses its champion, standard bearer or musician, it may no longer cast incantations
- Chariot units always count as Special choices for a Tomb Kings warband. Tomb King warbands may only take a single chariot unit, however this unit may include 1-5 chariots. This rule is an exception to the normal rule for warbands.
Special for Vampire Counts:- Need not include a spellcaster like normal
- Warband can be led by a Hero-level Necromancer, Vampire Thrall, Wight Lord, Wraith or unit champion, as well as a Hero-level necromancer. (However no Lord-level characters) If destroyed the warband will begin to crumble as per p. 25 of the Vampire Counts Army book
Special for Wood Elves:- None of the rules regarding Wood Elves playing Pitched Battles (e.g.placing an additional wood terrain piece on the Wood Elves' half of the table) apply, unless the scenario specifically states otherwise.
- Bladeweavers and First Dancers cannot act as warband commanders.

I have adjusted the starting warbands size. Zack and I played one game and Candi and I played two at a 150 point level, and it felt a bit too much like skirmish (which will be played later to augment larger battles.)
Specific army rules will be added when and if other armies show interest in playing.

Scenario: A Little War
The Spearmen take a hill with their Handgunner detachment, the Crossbowmen detachment on lower ground.
The Glade Guard set up in a ruin along with the Branch Wraith.
The Free Companies are guarding the ford to a river.
The Dryads set up behind some scrub.
The Huntsmen (scouts) set up in a ravine.
Turn 1:Glade Guard moves out of the ruins. Branch Wraith marched to the Dryads.
Dryads move but stay behind the scrub.
Glade Guards fire at the Crossbowmen. 2 miss due to long range, 2 hit, 1 wounds, killing a Crossbowman.
Spearmen and detachments march down from the hill. Huntsman march out of the ravine. Free Companies March through the ford.
Turn 2: Dryads charge the Huntsmen. Huntsmen stand and shoot. 1 hits but fails to wound. Dryads get 4 Hits, 4 wounds. Huntsmen unit destroyed. Dryads overrun 8”.
Branch Wraith marched into the scrub. Glade Guard moves towards Crossbowmen.
3 Glade Guards fire at the Crossbowmen, all miss.
Spearmen march forward.
Handgunners fire at Branch Wraith in the scrub. 1 misses due to firing at a single target, 1 misses due to the cover and 1 just misses.
Crossbowmen fire at Glade Guard, 1 misses due to long range.
Turn 3: Glade Guard regroups. The Dryads marched around the ravine. Branch Wraith marches into the ravine.
Glade Guard fire at Spearmen; 2 hits, 1 wound, save fails due to strength 4 Glade Guard Longbow. 1 Spearman killed.
Spearman move towards Glade Guard (can’t march due to proximity of Branch Wraith). Handgunners move towards Spearmen. Free Companies regroup to face the approaching Dryads.
Crossbowmen fire at the Glade Guards but miss.
Turn 4: Branch Wraith marches out of the ravine, behind Handgunners. Dryads march up behind the Handgunners.
Glade Guard fire at the Spearmen. 4 hits, 1 wound, 1 Spearman killed.
Handgunners move and turn to face the Dryads. Spearmen turn and move towards the Dryads. Crossbowmen turn to face the Dryads. Free Companies move towards the Dryads.
Turn 5: Dryads charge the Spearmen. Branch Wraith charges the Handgunners. Crossbowmen provide support fire for the Spearmen. 1 hits, 1 wound, 1 Dryad killed. Handgunners stand & shoot. 1 missed firing at an individual character, 1 hit. 1 wound, but the Branch Wraith made its Ward save. Spearmen elect to hold but fail their Fear check.
Glade Guard wheels slightly and advance.
Glade Guard fires at Crossbowmen. 2 miss due to long range, 2 hits. 2 wounds. Crossbowmen unit destroyed.
Branch Wraith attacks, 1 hit, 1 wound, 1 Handgunner killed. Remaining Handgunner in contact fails to hit. Branch Wraith inflicted 1 wound but Handgunners outnumbered him, results is a draw.
Dryads attack, 7 hits, 6 wounds, 1 saved, so 5 wounds inflicted. Spearmen can’t strike back. Spearmen had an extra rank, outnumbered the Dryads and have a standard so lose by 2. Spearmen break and flee 9”, Dryads pursue 7”. Free Companies pass their panic test. Handgunners Panic and Flee.
Spearmen fail to rally and flee 8”. Handgunners fail to rally and flee 12”. Free Companies charge the Branch Wraith. 4 hits. 0 wounds. Dryad strikes back, 1 hit, 1 wound, 1 Free Company killed. Free Companies outnumbered Branch Wraith and charge the rear so Free Companies win the combat by 2.
Turn 6: Dryads charge flank of Free Companies.
Glade Guard wheels to face the fleeing Spearmen.
Glade Guard fires at fleeing Spearmen. 3 hits. 2 wounds. Standard bearer and musician slain.
Dryads attack, 1 hit, 1 wound, Fighter taken out. Branch Wraith attacks, 2 hits, 2 wounds. Free Companies destroyed.
Handgunners rally and reform. Seargeant flees 7”.

If the Glade Guard killed the Spearmen banner bearer, doesn't that mean the WE made their objective? Or was the objective banner another banner?
BTW, if Candi's Branchwraith wasn't in combat when Chris' Free Companies then (because the Branchwraith is an independent character) it gets to automatically face whatever is charging it. Independent characters only have a flank/rear when they are in combat, just like skirmishers.

According to our reading the also have a facing when they charge, I had just charged on my last movement, and hadn't had another movement phase yet, so my facing was still where I charged.
And in order to capture the standard I had to take it out in Close combat, where my archers shot them down from a distance. That was my bad, I had rolled for the standard, but based on our last fights didn't realize he had one, so I was shooting for Annihilate, then at the end as we were calculating I saw my first note and realized I had been going for the wrong goal the whole time.

Gotcha. Thanks, for the clarification. As some of this can also be based on interpretation, I appreciate the give and take on the rules review. I keep one or two game systems in my head, and may be susceptible to muddling the rules (and I do love rules) now and again. |

Once more the Empire forces faced off against the Wood Elves, this time in the Southern Holds. And, once again, the Empire was massacred. I tried a swordsman based warband with two small detachments of handgunners and a small Free Company as arrow fodder and shiny bait. The bait part worked fine. What didn't work well was miring my swordsman behind a shallow river (I forgot you can't march through difficult terrain.)
The concept of the Handgunner detachments was sound, as they took the supporting fire role when the swordsmen were charged. But with abysmal dice rolling and dryads with ward saves, all was lost.

Next we had the Tomb Kings fighting a newly reorganized warband of Empire Knights, led by a Battle Wizard. Luck was on my side, somewhat as the Tomb King fast cavalry with bows are horrible shots and horrible in hand to hand. That was balanced by my wife having apparently sold her soul to roll high or low, as needed.
Luck also teased me with the fact that one of her two Tomb Swarms never arrived on the battlefield.
The knights tried, but when you miss your first attack with lances, the +2 ST matters not. And I think I failed all but one fear checks during the game, so one unit never even charged.
Luck decided I had had enough teasing when I missed most of my +2 armor saves.
In the end I eked out a draw. A draw! Yes, folks, things are starting to turn around for the Empire.
I believe I'll try halbardiers and Knights of the White Wolf next, hoping the increased strength will chop a little wood, as I know the Wood Elves are coming back.

Once again the Empire and Elves met in battle, this time in Naggaroth. We had discovered a small rules misinterpretation in the strength of the Glade Guard’s longbows, and this boosted my confidence, despite my previous losses. Alas, that confidence was unfounded. Beginning with placing my Handgunners out of range of any targets, things went downhill from there. With weapon skills of 4, and strengths and toughness of 4, sheer numbers could not overcome the Dryads (not at this point level anyway.) And the ward saves didn’t help. Mark up another massacre for the Wood Elves.
We decided that since the Wood Elves were at their maximum point size for this size category, and had fought one additional battle at that maximum size, that now would be a good time for a mega-battle (even though there are only the two of us so far.)
The battle was a treasure hunt (get he most tokens and defend them.) I took a wizard with the Steed of Shadows spell (20’ move) and knights and huntsmen so felt fairly comfortable in my speed. Luckily Candi re-configured her warband for speed as well, rather than the killer group that had enjoyed previous wins.
The Empire pulled off a sweeping victory…too sweeping, in fact, as the number of bonus points I earned far exceeded the maximum size of the warband at the next level. But I did get a nice magic banner.
So I’ve got that going for me going into the next level.

Speed optimized was 2 units of glade riders, and they were massacred. If I had been smart I would have stayed with the tried and true glade guard and dryad combo.
