Motor Mayhem League:
The Motor Mayhem League (MML) is the big time. It is where al drivers aspire to be, and where very few ever make it. For cash, skill, dedication, and deceit, the MML has no rival. The MML is where glory is found and fortunes and lives are lost.
The MML is the oldest league in existence, and is almost as old as OverDrive Arena itself, founded just a few years after OverDrive Arena became standard in major cities. While there are numerous other leagues spread throughout the world, none can claim as much influence, or come close to the MML in size and popularity.
The MML is very protective of its hard-won market share. Reluctant to allow any upstarts cutting into its share of revenues, the MML will do almost anything to protect its legend. Several years after the rise of the MML, a development of MML-affiliated local farm leagues cropped up in the cities that couldn’t support a full-fledged Motor Mayhem-style setup.
Each year, the MML grants licenses to local operators in exchange for a share of the profits. The top racers in these leagues are usually recruited by major teams. Some try to build up enough cash and support to attempt to go as an independent. Either way, many of their fans follow them as they progress through the MML.
Expansion of the OverDrive sport and the MML is nearly limitless. Over 70 major cities throughout the world host MML-sanctioned Arenas, generating an estimated 40- trillion dollars (US) each year. The MML has adopted a policy of tolerance towards the existence of other non-sanctioned leagues, due in large part to the fact that they act as feeders for the sport, and grow the sport as a whole. However, upstart operators have been known to meet with misfortune when seeking more than what the MML has been willing to grant.
As the season winds down, the political lines blur, bitter and heated rivalries cool to a simmer, and the teams grudgingly realize that all things lead to the single greatest event in the sport – the Neo Circus Maximus. Held in the ancient city of Rome, the two greatest teams of the current year lock in a series of thrilling battles until only one team is left standing. This event alone accounts for almost ten percent of the league revenues for the entire year. Millions of fans show up or log-in to participate in the weeklong event.
The MML has evolved over the years, and one of the ways in which it has done so is by passing various league edicts and sanctions. They seek to balance competition and exhibition to enhance the popularity of the sport and increase attendance and viewers. The safety of drivers has always been secondary to the popularity of the sport.
There have been times when the league has had to deal with this concern. And make changes that may not have always been consistent with overwhelming popular support. One of the recent changes has been the adaptation of the VR pod. The fate of this new rule is still to be determined, as it has remained unpopular with some of the more hardcore fans. It has brought in a whole new group of drivers, fans, and sponsors that are sure to shape the sport for years to come.
