Quren Haaveler
Quren was born and raised in Riddleport, born a bastard child to a lone mother. His father was almost totally unknown to him, and his mother rarely spoke of him. His father was a Gnome, according to his mother, and had left only a few weeks before Quren’s birth. His mother, Qaeryn, knew that a boy growing up in a place like Riddleport would be likely to end up a thief or pirate, and tried her best to shy him away from such things. Qaeryn was once a well-known Bard, who traveled for many years before settling down here. Unbeknownst to Quren, his mother was once on the run from someone, a powerful enemy that forced her into hiding. Much of their time spent together was spent learning to play the flute. She was a master, and under her tutelage, Quren had almost no trouble mastering it as well. Despite her efforts to teach him the ways of the Bard, his time spent on the streets of Riddleport instilled different skills into him, though unlike the most of the other youths of Riddleport, Quren often favored a sharp tongue over a strong arm or sharp dagger. Quren’s thoughts often drifted to the father that had disappeared before he had even known him, and often thought about seeking him out, if only to learn more about him. He spent some of his time studying the Gnomish language, in hopes of having a deeper connection to his errant father should they ever meet. When Quren was 19, he received a letter from someone claiming to be his father.
“To my child, My name is Turren, and I hope my letter finds you well. It is important that you keep this letter secret from your mother, because what I’m going to tell you may be dangerous information. I am the father that left you and your mother so many years ago. It was unfortunate but necessary, as all of our lives were in danger. You see, your mother was once an adventurer, a renowned bard who traveled with a famous adventuring company. She had made an enemy of a powerful man, the leader of a criminal organization. He sought someone out to assassinate them, and I was the one he found. She was the first one I targeted, but as fate would have it, I found myself smitten with her. I discarded my contract, and in mere weeks, we had fallen in love. After a year or so, word came around that Boro, the crime boss I had taken up a contract with, had put a bounty on my head for breaking his contract. That was why I left. If he had found me, he would’ve found your mother as well. Thankfully though, coming after me seems to have distracted Boro from seeking out your mother, so I will keep his sights set on me for as long as possible. Next month I will be setting out for Sandpoint, a frontier town, which I hope to make my home for a good while. If you are ever in trouble, seek me out, and I will help you.
Love, Turren.”
One night, a few weeks after Quren had received his father’s letter, he came home and discovered the door to his home kicked in. He entered cautiously, and as he made his way in, he found his mother laying on the ground, mortally wounded. She was still awake, and tears filled her eyes as her son approached her. He tried to bind her wounds, but his attempts were in vain. In moments, life had left her, and Quren was alone in the dark, silent house. Quren spent the next few days in mourning and contemplation, and he finally decided that he should seek out his father in Sandpoint. He packed his possessions, including his mother’s favorite flute, and began the long journey to Sandpoint. After many days of travel, he finally reached Sandpoint. He quickly began to question the locals about his father, though unfortunately, Turren was all but unheard of. It would seem that his father had never even arrived in Sandpoint…
