Q. Why a game league?
A. I love games. I love playing them, showing them, teaching them, etc.; but I also have a specific agenda or list I am hoping to play through. I am looking for a way to maximize that enjoyment. I am hoping to build a group of people that enjoy each other’s company and can get together whenever we can to play and learn games. Meeting new friends with similar interests is also a plus.
Q. Why the name?
A. I assume you are all amazing, talented, gifted, extraordinary people. It doesn’t matter whether you really are; I assume it to be so. Some of you may do wonderful, important work in the world, or be great philanthropists, or place yourselves in harm’s way for the rest of the citizenry. Some of you may be students still trying to figure out what is important in life. At the game table it does not matter. We are all equals. So I assume you are ordinarily extraordinary. Here, we are just playing games and having fun.
Q. What will it cost me, err you?...You know what I mean.
A. Your time, willingness to follow the league rules (mostly common-sense stuff), and nothing more. I will provide the games and the venue (either Medieval Starship or our house depending on day, time and game). Post-game I may ask for opinions on some sort of questionnaire and I will make a posting of our game record on Boardgamegeek.com. I encourage you to create an account there (and support them if possible) if you have not already done so. In addition we will be supporting our Friendly Local Gaming Store (or FLGS) as much as possible. I heartily urge you to buy your games from stores that encourage and allow game play. This is the only way they stay open. This is as much about building a gaming community as about playing games. While I am a part-time employee of Medieval Starship and friends with the owner, this group is not officially affiliated with the store. I take sole responsibility for it's control and inevitable wackiness.
Q. Rules? I knew it! What rules?
A. Very basic. These may be added to as time goes by
* Treat all other players with respect. We are all equals at the table. Good-natured gloating and victory whoops are not out of bounds but verbal abuse and poor sportsmanship are.
* Never claim a spot at an upcoming game if you aren’t sure you can be there. Spaces are finite, and the one you take may prevent someone else from playing (see below for League structure.)
* Communicate with the coordinator in a timely fashion if you can’t attend a game
* If you can’t control your temper, seek calming meditation before re-joining our group
* Leave non-game drama out of the games
* Never, ever cheat. It diminishes the game and the players.
* Err on the side of sportsmanship; call blows that are questionable, accept hits that are borderline.
Q. I find your rules bordering on the fascist, but let’s see where this goes. How does the League work?
A. Ah ha! You fell for the oldest trick in the book! No, wait. I didn’t mean to say that yet. Pretend I didn’t say that yet.
I will choose and research a game to play. I will post the game and a link to all available info on our message board. I will also post a day that I am looking to teach and play said game. I will post the number of players I am looking for and a number of alternates. The first people to reply by individual email as positives for play will get seats. Alternates will be stand-by’s in case someone can’t make it. This is why it’s important to not say you will play unless you are certain you can and want to. Spectators are welcome, within the limits of the venue. After we play there will be a short questionnaire (what did you like, what didn’t you like, would you play again, do you want to try expansions, would you play it at your house?, etc.). We’ll always take a vote to re-visit games we have already played but every other session should be a new game, whenever possible. In addition, you can petition to play a specific game we have already played on a particular day and time (this will come in handy for league-type games). I will keep an overall participation leader board and each game will have its own leader board.
Q. Your concepts intrigue me sir. If I had my wallet handy I would write you a check, but as it is I will simply ask, do you play games outside of your so-called League?
A. Awww shucks. No, no , put the money away. On second thought, use it to buy a new game! As to the question, yup, we have a role-playing group that meets every Sunday from 10am to about 5pm. If you’re interested in that, drop me a line. We alternate between Pathfinder, D&D 4E, and a third rotataing game (trying them out much as we do board games)
