Common misconceptions
General Lagging for break ball will be behind the head string but near the head string
8-Ball Sinking the eight on the break is not a win. See rules.
When the table is “open”, any object ball may be struck first except the eight ball.
The shooter loses if he (a) fouls when pocketing the eight ball; (b) pockets the eight ball before his group is cleared; (c) pockets the eight ball in an uncalled pocket; or (d) drives the eight ball off the table. These do not apply to the break shot.
No Rail after Contact If no ball is pocketed on a shot, the cue ball must contact an object ball, and after that contact at least one ball (cue ball or any object ball) must be driven to a rail, or the shot is a foul.
9-Ball all shots, including the break, must first strike the lowest numbered ball on the table
