Hello all,
I'm serena221. As you can probably tell, I'm new here. Anyway, I came here hoping for some advice and tips on being a dungeon master. My husband and I got into playing d&d last year, but had trouble finding a group to play with. We did after a while and got to play several sessions. Unfortunately, our dm fell sick and was unable to continue. so I took up the mantel but I have no knowledge of how tone a dm. I've made it through a number of sessions, but I could always use more help.

Hi there, That certainly is a big question. The scope of this site is primarily for players in our local game (I am not sure where you are located geographically; we are in SE Massachusetts), as there are better sites than this that can address questions of such an expansive breadth. I would suggest ENWorld, the D&D forums, and Dragonsfoot as excellent resources (I'm sure there are scores of others); but beware. If you ask how to DM you are likely to get equal parts help and scathing remarks. The first step is to be familiar with the rules of them game so start with the players Handbooks and DM Guides of whichever edition you are playing. Once you are at least familiar with that information you will be able to narrow the scope of your questions and will be more likely to get helpful answers. In the end the most important things are to have fun and provide fun for others. That we choose to do so by using some sort of codified rules system of make-believe is secondary to the laughter, stories and good company that inevitably occur. (Of course my players will tell you I am a bit of a rules-stickler anyway, but I plead German ancestry so it's not my fault..entirely) Best of Luck and happy gaming!!
